Story

While working for a large PCA church in Boca Raton, FL, God began laying a calling Jason Roberts’ heart to plant a church. As the calling was being examined, it became clear that the church would be planted in Virginia Beach and that it would care deeply about the Gospel and its impact on the city.

On September 22, 2002, nine adults and four kids met in the Roberts’ living room—sharing in the vision and laying the foundation to plant a missional, Gospel-centered church. Almost eight years later, we continue to grow, still passionately committed to our vision: to be a partnership in the Gospel.

The name Crosscurrent

cross•cur•rent (krôskûrnt) noun. – “A current flowing across another current; stretch of turbulent water in a river or sea caused by one current flowing into or across another current; actions counter to the main group activity.”

The name Crosscurrent Church originated from the belief that the church in it’s very nature was called to live in the world but not of the world, acting as an influencing agent in the culture with the Gospel. The church was never intended to be an isolated sub-culture, safely shielding itself from the world around it. The Church is formed by God to be a community called together by the Gospel and then sent on mission back into its surrounding culture to engage it and redeem it with that same Gospel.
