I was born and raised just outside of sunny Tampa, FL, and by the time I was 22, having also attended a small private college near Tampa, I wanted out.
Sure there was plenty of sun, but there were no waves, few places to hang a tree stand, and little else for me other than citrus and summer humidity.
So I headed north to Chesapeake, VA in the fall of 2003 toward the promise of a teaching position at a private school.
I taught middle school science for four years and am proud to say I survived with my sanity and without a criminal record.
I love to teach, but there was the whole middle school component that just didn’t jive with me.
I began attending Crosscurrent during the spring of 2004, and though I was saved at a young age I felt like I was hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the first time.
Thus, a long, uncomfortable process followed during which much of my knowledge of religion and tradition was completely and graciously undone.
I became involved in a local community group (where I met, chased down, and eventually married my beautiful bride, Christine) and began offering my musical gifts on the worship team.
By the spring of 2007 I felt strongly that God was calling me out of the classroom and into the service of His church.
Around the same time Tim Petersen, Crosscurrent’s pioneer Director of Music & Art, was following a similar call out of this position and into the medical field.
Thus, after much prayer and seeking God’s best for His church by both myself and the Elders, came on staff at Crosscurrent Church as the Director of Music & Art in July 2007.
But God’s thoughts and ways are not ours, and He made that abundantly clear.
In short, God led Christine and me to Lancaster, PA in July of 2008 to complete a year-long internship necessary for Christine to earn her Psy.D. in psychology.
So off we went in Abrahamic-I-have-no-idea-what-
You’re-doing fashion to south central PA (which is far too north for a FL boy). That fall it became clear that our hearts were in Virginia Beach and that we wanted nothing more than to return and partner with the work of the Gospel that Jesus was doing through His church at Crosscurrent. Thus, God led us back in August 2009 and we could not be more excited!
